The Lifeguarding course provides participants the knowledge and skills to prevent recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies in both shallow water (less than 7 feet) and deeper water (7 feet or more) and to provide professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies injuries and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel take over. This class is taught in a blended learning format and the assigned online portion(s) (accessed via mobile desktop or tablet) must be completed prior to each instructor-led session. Participants who successfully complete this course receive an American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding (including deep water) with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid valid for 2 years.

Prerequisites:
1. Swim freestyle or breaststroke 150 yards, tread water without using arms for two minutes, swim 50 yards. Goggles may be used.
2. Swim 20 yards, do a surface dive to depth of 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound diving brick from the bottom and return to the surface, swim 20 yards holding the brick at the surface, then climb out of the pool. Goggles may not be used.
*You can have the full cost of your class reimbursed if you meet the following criteria
-Be Hired by the Town of Vernon for the 2026 summer.
-Work throughout the 2026 summer (eight week period) and finish the summer in good standing.
Taking this class does NOT guarantee being hired by the Town. You must apply, interview and be extended an employment offer.
**This must be picked up at the Vernon Parks and Recreation office approximately two weeks prior to the class date. You will receive an email when your training manual and mask are ready for pickup.
