The Counselor in Training (CIT) Program is a partner program between Vernon Parks & Rec and Vernon Youth Services. This 2-week program will provide an engaging and dynamic two-week leadership development experience designed for teens ages 14-15 who are eager to grow their skills, gain valuable experience, and prepare for future roles as camp counselors or leaders in their communities.
Participants will explore a variety of topics including team building, communication, conflict resolution, and activity facilitation, while also developing their confidence and responsibility. The program combines hands-on on learning, group discussions, and supervised practice with younger campers, allowing CITs to put their new skills into action.
Participants will have the opportunity to participate in a CPR/First Aid Certification course as part of the program.
Location: Location will vary between Parks & Rec day camp sites. A full schedule with locations will be available prior to the start of the program
Ages: 14-15
Camp Hours: 8:00am to 3:00pm
Application and Registration: This program requires an application from interested candidates. Applications can be submitted between March 4 and May 15. Applications will be reviewed by CIT program staff and selected candidates will be notified of acceptance into the program within 5 days of application submission. Accepted applicants will then be enrolled into the program, with the full balance due by June 1.

If you are interested in applying for a camp scholarship, please contact the Vernon Social Services Department beginning February 18th at (860) 870-3661 to set up an appointment for eligibility screening. Securing a scholarship does not automatically hold a spot in the camp program; registration & payment must still be completed through the Vernon Parks & Recreation Office.
Pack List: Water bottle, non-refrigerated lunch, snack, swimsuit, towel, sunscreen, sneakers, change of clothes
All programs must meet minimum enrollment and staffing requirements to run
Participation in the CIT program does not guarantee future employment with the Town of Vernon
General Camp Info
- A full schedule of locations and activities will be made available to participants prior to the start of the program
- CITs will be given a swim test by the Lifeguards on the first day of each session to determine the areas of the pool they are able to safely swim in.
- Free lunches may be available through the Summer Meals program. More information will be shared about this program if/when it becomes available for 2025
